Narrative:
Climbing to FL320, french controllers issued traffic vectors. At FL310 to FL320, french ATC gave direct barlu intersection. We had previously been direct barga intersection on flight plan. Read back barga to ATC. Upon turning, found almost over fix. French ATC queried why hard turn and advised cleared to barlu, not barga. Ensuing miscom created close traffic situation. No TCASII alert. Also confusion on altitude. Upon leveling FL320, ATC cleared us to FL310, then immediately back to FL320. In our effort to clear up correct clearance en route/altitude previous time is lost as we and ATC and other aircraft stepped on each other's xmissions creating more confusion. Poor inflection and french ATC not correcting our readback created clearance confusion for several mins. French ATC asked why we were not complying with original clearance. My answer, 'can't do what I don't understand and can't get a clear reply from controller.'
