Narrative:
It was the first leg of a 2 day trip with a new hire first officer. First officer was flying the departure and given a 210 degree heading to intercept the 174 degree radial. I was completing the climb checklist and saw the CDI move and called 'course alive.' first officer was late in turning on course. Departure said they showed we were crossing the radial and asked if we were showing the same. In his confusion and turning back on course he nearly missed his assigned altitude and speed. I took control momentarily to correct the problem. Contributing to the problem was my tiredness as I had been up early that morning and my over reliance or overestimation of the first officer's abilities. From now on, I will pay close attention to the PF's progress and insist on more automation for at least first few legs.

Title: A CL65 CREW, DEPARTING CVG, FAILED TO INTERCEPT ASSIGNED VOR RADIAL, SPAWNING QUERIES FROM ATC.
Narrative: IT WAS THE FIRST LEG OF A 2 DAY TRIP WITH A NEW HIRE FO. FO WAS FLYING THE DEP AND GIVEN A 210 DEG HDG TO INTERCEPT THE 174 DEG RADIAL. I WAS COMPLETING THE CLB CHKLIST AND SAW THE CDI MOVE AND CALLED 'COURSE ALIVE.' FO WAS LATE IN TURNING ON COURSE. DEP SAID THEY SHOWED WE WERE XING THE RADIAL AND ASKED IF WE WERE SHOWING THE SAME. IN HIS CONFUSION AND TURNING BACK ON COURSE HE NEARLY MISSED HIS ASSIGNED ALT AND SPD. I TOOK CTL MOMENTARILY TO CORRECT THE PROB. CONTRIBUTING TO THE PROB WAS MY TIREDNESS AS I HAD BEEN UP EARLY THAT MORNING AND MY OVER RELIANCE OR OVERESTIMATION OF THE FO'S ABILITIES. FROM NOW ON, I WILL PAY CLOSE ATTN TO THE PF'S PROGRESS AND INSIST ON MORE AUTOMATION FOR AT LEAST FIRST FEW LEGS.
