Narrative:
While operating flight from msy, I was serving as first officer. ATC cleared our flight to climb to FL310. The correct altitude was set in and verified by the captain who was the PIC and also the PF. I was not flying and was off the ATC radio speaking to company and obtaining ATIS. Due to distraction, the captain overshot the assigned altitude of FL310 and leveled off at FL320, after being called by center. The captain then descended back to FL310. ATC advised that the overshoot did not cause any problems nor did it affect any other aircraft. I believe the problem was caused by a malfunction in the altitude alert window or button, or was accidentally bumped off by 1000 ft. Supplemental information from acn 537562: overshoot of assigned FL310 due to misset altitude reminder window and subsequent loss of altitude 'arm' and FL310 warning chimes. PF was distraction. Reason for FL310 disarm not fully recallable. Flight duration was a short +52 mins.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MD80 FLC OVERSHOOTS ITS ASSIGNED ALT WHEN THE ALT ALERTER HAS BEEN MOVED FROM A PRESET ALT DURING CLBOUT FROM MSY, LA.
Narrative: WHILE OPERATING FLT FROM MSY, I WAS SERVING AS FO. ATC CLRED OUR FLT TO CLB TO FL310. THE CORRECT ALT WAS SET IN AND VERIFIED BY THE CAPT WHO WAS THE PIC AND ALSO THE PF. I WAS NOT FLYING AND WAS OFF THE ATC RADIO SPEAKING TO COMPANY AND OBTAINING ATIS. DUE TO DISTR, THE CAPT OVERSHOT THE ASSIGNED ALT OF FL310 AND LEVELED OFF AT FL320, AFTER BEING CALLED BY CTR. THE CAPT THEN DSNDED BACK TO FL310. ATC ADVISED THAT THE OVERSHOOT DID NOT CAUSE ANY PROBS NOR DID IT AFFECT ANY OTHER ACFT. I BELIEVE THE PROB WAS CAUSED BY A MALFUNCTION IN THE ALT ALERT WINDOW OR BUTTON, OR WAS ACCIDENTALLY BUMPED OFF BY 1000 FT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 537562: OVERSHOOT OF ASSIGNED FL310 DUE TO MISSET ALT REMINDER WINDOW AND SUBSEQUENT LOSS OF ALT 'ARM' AND FL310 WARNING CHIMES. PF WAS DISTR. REASON FOR FL310 DISARM NOT FULLY RECALLABLE. FLT DURATION WAS A SHORT +52 MINS.
