Narrative:
While descending toward cgf airport (cuyahoga county, oh), approach said to expect visual and we would be #2 following a citation coming from the south (we were approaching from the east). Approach told us to turn to a heading to intercept the localizer (about 7 mi) and to look for the traffic on left downwind. We thought this would not work and asked. They said we were #2. While looking for the traffic and trying to figure if the spacing would work, I looked at our altitude. It was 2700 ft, our last assigned was 3000 ft. I immediately climbed to 3000 ft and approach said nothing, but they apologized for the spacing and cleared us for the visual. We did a right descending turn for the runway. While being vectored to follow traffic, we knew the spacing would not work. This brought us within 4 mi of final and required us to look for traffic, stay on the localizer and wonder how we would be able to land. Another aircraft that landed after us also complained of ATC vectoring.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A BE40 CPR PIC COMPLAINS OF TFC SPACING PROBS CREATED BY CLE APCH CTLR THAT WAS CONTRIBUTORY TO HIS ALTDEV PRIOR TO MAKING A VISUAL APCH INTO CGF, OH.
Narrative: WHILE DSNDING TOWARD CGF ARPT (CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH), APCH SAID TO EXPECT VISUAL AND WE WOULD BE #2 FOLLOWING A CITATION COMING FROM THE S (WE WERE APCHING FROM THE E). APCH TOLD US TO TURN TO A HEADING TO INTERCEPT THE LOC (ABOUT 7 MI) AND TO LOOK FOR THE TFC ON L DOWNWIND. WE THOUGHT THIS WOULD NOT WORK AND ASKED. THEY SAID WE WERE #2. WHILE LOOKING FOR THE TFC AND TRYING TO FIGURE IF THE SPACING WOULD WORK, I LOOKED AT OUR ALT. IT WAS 2700 FT, OUR LAST ASSIGNED WAS 3000 FT. I IMMEDIATELY CLBED TO 3000 FT AND APCH SAID NOTHING, BUT THEY APOLOGIZED FOR THE SPACING AND CLRED US FOR THE VISUAL. WE DID A R DSNDING TURN FOR THE RWY. WHILE BEING VECTORED TO FOLLOW TFC, WE KNEW THE SPACING WOULD NOT WORK. THIS BROUGHT US WITHIN 4 MI OF FINAL AND REQUIRED US TO LOOK FOR TFC, STAY ON THE LOC AND WONDER HOW WE WOULD BE ABLE TO LAND. ANOTHER ACFT THAT LANDED AFTER US ALSO COMPLAINED OF ATC VECTORING.
