Narrative:
We were cleared for the full VOR 20 approach to westfield airport (baf) by bdl approach, but restr to 2500 ft MSL until established on final inbound. We crossed the IAF at 4000 ft MSL and proceeded to descend in the procedure turn. At this time, bdl approach handed us off to westfield tower. Once established inbound, we were still at 3000 ft MSL and knew we would be unable to descend to 2100 ft MSL, the minimum crossing altitude at the FAF. We forgot that we were supposed to advise ATC if we needed additional turns in the hold as stated in aim. So we proceeded to execute another turn in the hold to descend to 2500 ft MSL, then 2100 ft MSL when established on final, without notifying baf tower. Baf tower informed us of our mistake when bdl approach advised them of our deviation. Startled by this, I failed to notice my student had descended to 1800 ft MSL at the FAF. The approach continued without incident.

Title: AN UNAUTH UNCOORD TURN AND ALTDEV OCCURS WHEN THE PLTS OF AN M20 DO NOT ADHERE TO GOOD ATC PRACTICES DURING A PROC TURN AND DSCNT INTO BAF, MA.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED FOR THE FULL VOR 20 APCH TO WESTFIELD ARPT (BAF) BY BDL APCH, BUT RESTR TO 2500 FT MSL UNTIL ESTABLISHED ON FINAL INBOUND. WE CROSSED THE IAF AT 4000 FT MSL AND PROCEEDED TO DSND IN THE PROC TURN. AT THIS TIME, BDL APCH HANDED US OFF TO WESTFIELD TWR. ONCE ESTABLISHED INBOUND, WE WERE STILL AT 3000 FT MSL AND KNEW WE WOULD BE UNABLE TO DSND TO 2100 FT MSL, THE MINIMUM XING ALT AT THE FAF. WE FORGOT THAT WE WERE SUPPOSED TO ADVISE ATC IF WE NEEDED ADDITIONAL TURNS IN THE HOLD AS STATED IN AIM. SO WE PROCEEDED TO EXECUTE ANOTHER TURN IN THE HOLD TO DSND TO 2500 FT MSL, THEN 2100 FT MSL WHEN ESTABLISHED ON FINAL, WITHOUT NOTIFYING BAF TWR. BAF TWR INFORMED US OF OUR MISTAKE WHEN BDL APCH ADVISED THEM OF OUR DEV. STARTLED BY THIS, I FAILED TO NOTICE MY STUDENT HAD DSNDED TO 1800 FT MSL AT THE FAF. THE APCH CONTINUED WITHOUT INCIDENT.
