Narrative:
We were departing VFR from ict to ixd to pick up a family member with medical problems. We requested VFR flight following to ixd. Clearance delivery asked what altitude we were requesting. I responded with 8500 ft. (This is an incorrect altitude for the direction of flight.) a clearance was issued, we departed and climbed to 8500 ft and were turned over to center. We worked 3 different center sectors until our descent into ixd. I did not recognize the error until beginning the descent into ixd, at which time I became aware of what had happened. It was the end of a long day. I was tired and preoccupied with getting to ixd as soon as practical. I needed to be concentrating on my flying and not on other matters. Fly the airplane first!

Title: C414 PLT FLEW AT THE WRONG VFR ALT ON A VFR XCOUNTRY FLT WHILE USING FLT FOLLOWING AND IN CONTACT WITH SEVERAL DIFFERENT CTLRS WHO NEVER CHALLENGED HIS ALT.
Narrative: WE WERE DEPARTING VFR FROM ICT TO IXD TO PICK UP A FAMILY MEMBER WITH MEDICAL PROBS. WE REQUESTED VFR FLT FOLLOWING TO IXD. CLRNC DELIVERY ASKED WHAT ALT WE WERE REQUESTING. I RESPONDED WITH 8500 FT. (THIS IS AN INCORRECT ALT FOR THE DIRECTION OF FLT.) A CLRNC WAS ISSUED, WE DEPARTED AND CLBED TO 8500 FT AND WERE TURNED OVER TO CTR. WE WORKED 3 DIFFERENT CTR SECTORS UNTIL OUR DSCNT INTO IXD. I DID NOT RECOGNIZE THE ERROR UNTIL BEGINNING THE DSCNT INTO IXD, AT WHICH TIME I BECAME AWARE OF WHAT HAD HAPPENED. IT WAS THE END OF A LONG DAY. I WAS TIRED AND PREOCCUPIED WITH GETTING TO IXD AS SOON AS PRACTICAL. I NEEDED TO BE CONCENTRATING ON MY FLYING AND NOT ON OTHER MATTERS. FLY THE AIRPLANE FIRST!
