Narrative:
On takeoff from sat runway 12R at approximately 1200 ft AGL, right engine experienced compressor stalls. Power was reduced and stalls ceased. Engine parameters returned to normal, therefore it was decided not to perform a precautionary engine shutdown. Also the WX at sat was 20 overcast and 1/4. We declared an emergency and requested radar vectors to ILS runway 12R. We ran the appropriate checklists and performed a 2 engine ILS approach to runway 12R to a successful landing. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the right engine was never shut down but was not pulled to idle as at partial power the engine operated normally. The reporter said maintenance was going to replace the main fuel control.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B757-200 ON TKOF CLB AT 1000 FT TO 1500 FT DECLARED AN EMER AND DIVERTED DUE TO R ENG COMPRESSOR STALLS CAUSED BY A FAILED MAIN FUEL CTL.
Narrative: ON TKOF FROM SAT RWY 12R AT APPROX 1200 FT AGL, R ENG EXPERIENCED COMPRESSOR STALLS. PWR WAS REDUCED AND STALLS CEASED. ENG PARAMETERS RETURNED TO NORMAL, THEREFORE IT WAS DECIDED NOT TO PERFORM A PRECAUTIONARY ENG SHUTDOWN. ALSO THE WX AT SAT WAS 20 OVCST AND 1/4. WE DECLARED AN EMER AND REQUESTED RADAR VECTORS TO ILS RWY 12R. WE RAN THE APPROPRIATE CHKLISTS AND PERFORMED A 2 ENG ILS APCH TO RWY 12R TO A SUCCESSFUL LNDG. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE R ENG WAS NEVER SHUT DOWN BUT WAS NOT PULLED TO IDLE AS AT PARTIAL PWR THE ENG OPERATED NORMALLY. THE RPTR SAID MAINT WAS GOING TO REPLACE THE MAIN FUEL CTL.
