Narrative:

Right generator on aircraft was written up and deferred because it occasionally tripped off line on the ground. Per the MEL, the APU remained on during flight to provide a back-up generator. An APU oil temperature caution illuminated in cruise flight. Our company flight manual said to shut down the APU if it was not essential -- or if it was essential, the APU was to stay on and a landing made at the nearest suitable airport. After coordination with dispatch and maintenance, it was agreed that ZZZ (our destination) was the nearest suitable field. An emergency was declared. The landing at ZZZ was uneventful. Although there were other airports closer mileage-wise than ZZZ, I felt that it would take more time to coordination a change in destination than it would take to continue to ZZZ. Also, I knew the WX was fairly good at ZZZ and that they had fire and rescue if needed.

Narrative: R GENERATOR ON ACFT WAS WRITTEN UP AND DEFERRED BECAUSE IT OCCASIONALLY TRIPPED OFF LINE ON THE GND. PER THE MEL, THE APU REMAINED ON DURING FLT TO PROVIDE A BACK-UP GENERATOR.
