Narrative:
Confusing signs during taxi at night. We were taxiing out of FBO. We were given the instructions: taxiway J, to taxiway a, right on taxiway a, left on A4, right on taxiway B, hold short of taxiway Z. On the cross over txwys between txwys a and B (A5, A4, A3) there are also roadways for ground vehicles to drive. We turned on one of these vehicle crossovers instead of A4. It appeared by the lighted signs that we were turning onto A4, but unfortunately we were not. There are so many signs at iad that these vehicle roadways should be better defined.
