Narrative:

We were near the end of a long day, lax mex turn. Approaching jli inbound to lax, received 2 rertes, with the last being jli pdz mitts lax. Passing jli, ATC queried why we were still heading northwest towards pdz, they wanted us on the vista 1 arrival. We told them of our last routing, received a heading and altitude change towards vista. Our initial readback had been mitts 1 as understood and ATC had not questioned the readback, so the error was not found until passing jli. First officer flying, captain on radios.
