Narrative:

I was confirming that the safety video was done, when I heard (that we were) cleared into position and hold, and I definitely heard the first officer repeat that back without any counter back from tower. I noted that there was final traffic, but far away, and I expected an immediate takeoff clearance (and was wondering why ATC likes to put us into hold. I prefer a rolling takeoff which allows more energy). Instead, tower stated that we were not supposed to be on the runway but were supposed to have 'hold position' (ie, hold short). Tower then told us to remain on the runway and said words to the effect that we were not in danger holding on the runway. We were then cleared for takeoff. Tower was very professional. Consider the difference in the order of the same words -- 'hold position' versus 'position and hold.' I have to look up hold short and its use.

Title: B737 BELIEVE THEY HAD RECEIVED A CLRNC TO TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD BUT BECAME CONFUSED WHEN THE CTLR STATED TO HOLD POS.

Narrative: I WAS CONFIRMING THAT THE SAFETY VIDEO WAS DONE, WHEN I HEARD (THAT WE WERE) CLRED INTO POS AND HOLD, AND I DEFINITELY HEARD THE FO REPEAT THAT BACK WITHOUT ANY COUNTER BACK FROM TWR. I NOTED THAT THERE WAS FINAL TFC, BUT FAR AWAY, AND I EXPECTED AN IMMEDIATE TKOF CLRNC (AND WAS WONDERING WHY ATC LIKES TO PUT US INTO HOLD. I PREFER A ROLLING TKOF WHICH ALLOWS MORE ENERGY). INSTEAD, TWR STATED THAT WE WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE ON THE RWY BUT WERE SUPPOSED TO HAVE 'HOLD POS' (IE, HOLD SHORT). TWR THEN TOLD US TO REMAIN ON THE RWY AND SAID WORDS TO THE EFFECT THAT WE WERE NOT IN DANGER HOLDING ON THE RWY. WE WERE THEN CLRED FOR TKOF. TWR WAS VERY PROFESSIONAL. CONSIDER THE DIFFERENCE IN THE ORDER OF THE SAME WORDS -- 'HOLD POS' VERSUS 'POS AND HOLD.' I HAVE TO LOOK UP HOLD SHORT AND ITS USE.
