Narrative:
Was wanting to leave to beat WX coming in. I took off and didn't turn the transponder on. I hadn't selected a destination in the GPS and so I spent time doing that. After a while, I realized the reply light wasn't flashing and the transponder was off. I turned it on. I should have slowed down, done my navigating on the ground, or waited until the storm passed.
