Narrative:
Aircraft #1 out of hold, cleared to cvg, descending out of 15000 ft to 11000 ft. Aircraft #2 entering hold, stepped down to 15000 ft from 17000 ft, then 14000 ft aircraft #1, when cleared in, was allowed to resume normal speed. Aircraft #1 descended slowly, aircraft #2 descended faster. Aircraft #1 overtook aircraft #2 at 'location.' aircraft #1 at 13600 ft descending aircraft #2 14000 ft (level). During the whole period, I was discussing with my d-side (training with instructor) about other aircraft from another sector we were told would be rerouted to our fix for cvg. We were trying to get their flts up on the 'ccld.' someone was also coming in and talking about it behind us. I think it was the supervisor from that other sector. I didn't ensure vertical before clearing aircraft #2 down, and shouldn't have let aircraft #1 speed up. It was moderate traffic at the time. I first noticed the loss when conflict alert went off. Aircraft #2 was entering hold, turning left and away from aircraft #1.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ZID CTLR BECOMES DISTRACTED DUE TO PERIPHERAL CONVERSATIONS ABOUT TFC FLOWS AND MISSES CONFLICT WITH A CARJ AND B737 DSNDING IN THE SAME HOLDING PATTERN.
Narrative: ACFT #1 OUT OF HOLD, CLRED TO CVG, DSNDING OUT OF 15000 FT TO 11000 FT. ACFT #2 ENTERING HOLD, STEPPED DOWN TO 15000 FT FROM 17000 FT, THEN 14000 FT ACFT #1, WHEN CLRED IN, WAS ALLOWED TO RESUME NORMAL SPD. ACFT #1 DSNDED SLOWLY, ACFT #2 DSNDED FASTER. ACFT #1 OVERTOOK ACFT #2 AT 'LOCATION.' ACFT #1 AT 13600 FT DSNDING ACFT #2 14000 FT (LEVEL). DURING THE WHOLE PERIOD, I WAS DISCUSSING WITH MY D-SIDE (TRAINING WITH INSTRUCTOR) ABOUT OTHER ACFT FROM ANOTHER SECTOR WE WERE TOLD WOULD BE REROUTED TO OUR FIX FOR CVG. WE WERE TRYING TO GET THEIR FLTS UP ON THE 'CCLD.' SOMEONE WAS ALSO COMING IN AND TALKING ABOUT IT BEHIND US. I THINK IT WAS THE SUPVR FROM THAT OTHER SECTOR. I DIDN'T ENSURE VERT BEFORE CLRING ACFT #2 DOWN, AND SHOULDN'T HAVE LET ACFT #1 SPD UP. IT WAS MODERATE TFC AT THE TIME. I FIRST NOTICED THE LOSS WHEN CONFLICT ALERT WENT OFF. ACFT #2 WAS ENTERING HOLD, TURNING L AND AWAY FROM ACFT #1.
