Narrative:

After landing on runway 13R at dfw, we are often told to hold short of runway 18R on taxiway a. I find that a bit of optical deception can occur when there are 2 or more aircraft holding short of runway 18L at the same time. The ground rises slightly from near the A-A6 intersection to the runway 18R hold short point. At the bottom of the rise it is difficult to see the red runway 18R/36L sign and impossible to see the landing gear and wheels of the planes holding short of runway 18L. If a larger aircraft such as a B757 or B767 is the last in line holding short of runway 18L, you can fool yourself into thinking that they are holding short of runway 18R. When this happens you might say to yourself, 'ok, I'm supposed to get behind that last aircraft.' if you're thinking this and get distraction by something as you approach the runway 18R hold line, a runway incursion could result. This happened to me several months ago, but fortunately I saw the sign and hold lines when I was about 20 ft from them.

Title: AN MD80 CREW, AFTER LNDG AT DFW, MADE A 'SUDDEN STOP' WHEN A RWY HOLD LINE WAS DISCOVERED ONLY 20 FT AWAY.

Narrative: AFTER LNDG ON RWY 13R AT DFW, WE ARE OFTEN TOLD TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 18R ON TXWY A. I FIND THAT A BIT OF OPTICAL DECEPTION CAN OCCUR WHEN THERE ARE 2 OR MORE ACFT HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 18L AT THE SAME TIME. THE GND RISES SLIGHTLY FROM NEAR THE A-A6 INTXN TO THE RWY 18R HOLD SHORT POINT. AT THE BOTTOM OF THE RISE IT IS DIFFICULT TO SEE THE RED RWY 18R/36L SIGN AND IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE THE LNDG GEAR AND WHEELS OF THE PLANES HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 18L. IF A LARGER ACFT SUCH AS A B757 OR B767 IS THE LAST IN LINE HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 18L, YOU CAN FOOL YOURSELF INTO THINKING THAT THEY ARE HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 18R. WHEN THIS HAPPENS YOU MIGHT SAY TO YOURSELF, 'OK, I'M SUPPOSED TO GET BEHIND THAT LAST ACFT.' IF YOU'RE THINKING THIS AND GET DISTR BY SOMETHING AS YOU APCH THE RWY 18R HOLD LINE, A RWY INCURSION COULD RESULT. THIS HAPPENED TO ME SEVERAL MONTHS AGO, BUT FORTUNATELY I SAW THE SIGN AND HOLD LINES WHEN I WAS ABOUT 20 FT FROM THEM.
