Narrative:
I was being checked out in a complex aircraft (retractable and constant speed propeller). I was with a cfii. We were flying north from new jersey to connecticut when the WX closed in. The cfii had to get back to home base, and started to scud run into bad WX. The hand-held GPS failed and the instructor had no awareness of where we were. He did not have any approach plates and was unprepared to fly IFR which the plane was equipped to do. We were flying in the hills of western connecticut and the radios would not work. In retrospect, because we were too low. I recognized a landmark and knew where we were in relationship to danbury. We gained a little altitude and got clearance to land, and did, without incident. Flew into bad WX. Failed GPS. Factors: no situational awareness. Cfii was not current or familiar with aircraft. No approach plates. Cfii became unhinged. Cfii tired and just not showing good judgement. Get homeitis.

IN RETROSPECT, BECAUSE WE WERE TOO LOW. I RECOGNIZED A LANDMARK AND KNEW WHERE WE WERE IN RELATIONSHIP TO DANBURY. WE GAINED A LITTLE ALT AND GOT CLRNC TO LAND, AND DID, WITHOUT INCIDENT. FLEW INTO BAD WX. FAILED GPS. FACTORS: NO SITUATIONAL AWARENESS. CFII WAS NOT CURRENT OR FAMILIAR WITH ACFT. NO APCH PLATES. CFII BECAME UNHINGED. CFII TIRED AND JUST NOT SHOWING GOOD JUDGEMENT. GET HOMEITIS.
