Narrative:
During taxi to runway 4 at orf, our aircraft crossed the ILS critical hold line. We had been given instructions to taxi to runway 4 but hold short of the ILS critical area. The mistake was definitely the fault of the crew for crossing into the area, however, this mistake was due in part to an unusually far distance between the ILS hold line and the runway threshold. We, as a crew, had not experienced an ILS hold line so far from the runway threshold. We crossed the ILS hold line almost immediately after leaving the ramp because we did not expect the hold line to be so close, we were not looking for it yet. As I stated earlier, this was my fault. It would have been helpful if the ATC ground controller at orf had pointed out to us that the hold short line was closer to our present position. A clearance such as 'taxi via taxiway J to the ILS hold short' may also have alerted us to the hold's unusual location.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: THE FLC OF A C560 CPR JET CROSSES THE ILS HOLD SHORT LINE OF ORF, VA.
Narrative: DURING TAXI TO RWY 4 AT ORF, OUR ACFT CROSSED THE ILS CRITICAL HOLD LINE. WE HAD BEEN GIVEN INSTRUCTIONS TO TAXI TO RWY 4 BUT HOLD SHORT OF THE ILS CRITICAL AREA. THE MISTAKE WAS DEFINITELY THE FAULT OF THE CREW FOR XING INTO THE AREA, HOWEVER, THIS MISTAKE WAS DUE IN PART TO AN UNUSUALLY FAR DISTANCE BTWN THE ILS HOLD LINE AND THE RWY THRESHOLD. WE, AS A CREW, HAD NOT EXPERIENCED AN ILS HOLD LINE SO FAR FROM THE RWY THRESHOLD. WE CROSSED THE ILS HOLD LINE ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AFTER LEAVING THE RAMP BECAUSE WE DID NOT EXPECT THE HOLD LINE TO BE SO CLOSE, WE WERE NOT LOOKING FOR IT YET. AS I STATED EARLIER, THIS WAS MY FAULT. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN HELPFUL IF THE ATC GND CTLR AT ORF HAD POINTED OUT TO US THAT THE HOLD SHORT LINE WAS CLOSER TO OUR PRESENT POS. A CLRNC SUCH AS 'TAXI VIA TXWY J TO THE ILS HOLD SHORT' MAY ALSO HAVE ALERTED US TO THE HOLD'S UNUSUAL LOCATION.
