Narrative:
(VFR cross country: from bvy to hwv) I requested a VFR squawk code to hwv at 4500 ft. Upon departure I contacted ZBW approach on 124.4 and stated 'bos approach, warrior X 1200 ft for 4500 ft out of bvy, en route to hwv.' bos: 'roger, radar contact, 2 mi southwest of bvy, cleared through bedford airspace above 2500 ft.' a few mins went by and controller asked my altitude. I stated 'aircraft X is 3500 ft for 4500 ft.' bos stated: 'aircraft X, you're in class B without a clearance, maintain 3500 ft.' I maintained altitude and later was handed off and given my requested 4500 ft. At the time I perceived my radar contact, squawk code, requested altitude and clearance given to be a clearance through class B. At the time, current conditions were 2500-2800 ft scattered. Maintaining VFR, staying below class B (3000 ft) and above class D (2500 ft) were nearly impossible, therefore reaffirming my presumption of clearance to climb. Additionally, controller never stated to remain clear of class B.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: UNAUTH PENETRATION OF BOS CLASS B AIRSPACE BY A LOW TIME PVT PLT IN A PA28 WITHOUT A VFR FLT PLAN SW OF BVY, MA.
Narrative: (VFR XCOUNTRY: FROM BVY TO HWV) I REQUESTED A VFR SQUAWK CODE TO HWV AT 4500 FT. UPON DEP I CONTACTED ZBW APCH ON 124.4 AND STATED 'BOS APCH, WARRIOR X 1200 FT FOR 4500 FT OUT OF BVY, ENRTE TO HWV.' BOS: 'ROGER, RADAR CONTACT, 2 MI SW OF BVY, CLRED THROUGH BEDFORD AIRSPACE ABOVE 2500 FT.' A FEW MINS WENT BY AND CTLR ASKED MY ALT. I STATED 'ACFT X IS 3500 FT FOR 4500 FT.' BOS STATED: 'ACFT X, YOU'RE IN CLASS B WITHOUT A CLRNC, MAINTAIN 3500 FT.' I MAINTAINED ALT AND LATER WAS HANDED OFF AND GIVEN MY REQUESTED 4500 FT. AT THE TIME I PERCEIVED MY RADAR CONTACT, SQUAWK CODE, REQUESTED ALT AND CLRNC GIVEN TO BE A CLRNC THROUGH CLASS B. AT THE TIME, CURRENT CONDITIONS WERE 2500-2800 FT SCATTERED. MAINTAINING VFR, STAYING BELOW CLASS B (3000 FT) AND ABOVE CLASS D (2500 FT) WERE NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE, THEREFORE REAFFIRMING MY PRESUMPTION OF CLRNC TO CLB. ADDITIONALLY, CTLR NEVER STATED TO REMAIN CLR OF CLASS B.
