Narrative:
On mar/fri/02, my regular instructor was sick, so I got a different instructor and decided we would do a hold and some approachs to remain current. We were flying a piper arrow. After a couple of holds and instrument approachs we decided to do some pattern work at syr hancock airport. On the second time around, we were cleared to land behind the B737. When on downwind we lost radios. Before turning onto base we talked about wake turbulence. I mentioned that we should extend the downwind to avoid it. (While on downwind we noted, also, that the B737 had landed on runway 28 at about taxiway J.) after I said to extend the downwind he said no! Took control of the aircraft, turned base, and made a turn towards taxiway J on runway 28. We were at 1150 ft MSL on our short base and at 800 ft MSL when we got over the runway. Then landed on runway 28. What we had done is flown over an airliner holding short on a taxiway at the end of runway 28. The confusion was who was the PIC, the loss of radios, and proper technique for wake turbulence.

Title: A P28T PLT AND INSTRUCTOR, DURING A CURRENCY RIDE, MADE A NON-STANDARD APCH TO LNDG AT SYR.
Narrative: ON MAR/FRI/02, MY REGULAR INSTRUCTOR WAS SICK, SO I GOT A DIFFERENT INSTRUCTOR AND DECIDED WE WOULD DO A HOLD AND SOME APCHS TO REMAIN CURRENT. WE WERE FLYING A PIPER ARROW. BEFORE TURNING ONTO BASE WE TALKED ABOUT WAKE TURB. I MENTIONED THAT WE SHOULD EXTEND THE DOWNWIND TO AVOID IT. (WHILE ON DOWNWIND WE NOTED, ALSO, THAT THE B737 HAD LANDED ON RWY 28 AT ABOUT TXWY J.) AFTER I SAID TO EXTEND THE DOWNWIND HE SAID NO! TOOK CTL OF THE ACFT, TURNED BASE, AND MADE A TURN TOWARDS TXWY J ON RWY 28. WE WERE AT 1150 FT MSL ON OUR SHORT BASE AND AT 800 FT MSL WHEN WE GOT OVER THE RWY. THEN LANDED ON RWY 28. WHAT WE HAD DONE IS FLOWN OVER AN AIRLINER HOLDING SHORT ON A TXWY AT THE END OF RWY 28. THE CONFUSION WAS WHO WAS THE PIC, THE LOSS OF RADIOS, AND PROPER TECHNIQUE FOR WAKE TURB.
