Narrative:
My student thought he was cleared to taxi to runway 31R at intersection A9, but was actually cleared to taxi to runway 13R at intersection A9. When he pulled up to the hold short line at intersection A9, he crossed the hold short line without a clearance. When he was cleared for takeoff, he turned onto runway 31L and took off. There was no traffic at the time and tower asked him to make a left 180 degree turn and leave class D airspace to the southeast.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN SMA PLT, WHILE BEING OBSERVED BY HIS INSTRUCTOR WHO WAS ON THE GND, TAXIED ACROSS A HOLD SHORT LINE WITHOUT A CLRNC, THEN TOOK OFF IN A DIRECTION OPPOSITE TO HIS CLRNC.
Narrative: MY STUDENT THOUGHT HE WAS CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 31R AT INTXN A9, BUT WAS ACTUALLY CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 13R AT INTXN A9. WHEN HE PULLED UP TO THE HOLD SHORT LINE AT INTXN A9, HE CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE WITHOUT A CLRNC. WHEN HE WAS CLRED FOR TKOF, HE TURNED ONTO RWY 31L AND TOOK OFF. THERE WAS NO TFC AT THE TIME AND TWR ASKED HIM TO MAKE A L 180 DEG TURN AND LEAVE CLASS D AIRSPACE TO THE SE.
