Narrative:
I landed the bonanza on runway 23 and exited the active by turning left onto taxiway G. After I pulled past the hold line, I stopped and completed my post runway checklist (flaps up, strobes off, etc) and called for permission to taxi. The reply transmission was a bit garbled but I thought I heard 'XXXX clear to taxi to GA terminal' and began to move forward and cross taxiway a. Taxiway G makes a 45 degree entry onto taxiway a, and only after I began to move did I look across my wife and see the cheyenne on my right, moving on a collision course. Due to the 45 degree entry the twin was in my 5 O'clock position. Both of us braked at the same time and came to a stop about 30 ft apart. The controller then cleared the twin to continue and then, after a bit of a lecture, cleared me to GA, which was straight ahead on taxiway G. The factors which led to this near midair collision were unclr radio transmission by ground (which I acknowledged), movement by me before I had cleared the route visually, and my unfamiliarity with the airport.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: BEECH BONANZA PLT STARTED TAXI TO PARKING AFTER LNDG BEFORE CLRED RESULTING IN A PIPER CHEYENNE ON A COLLISION COURSE. BOTH ACFT CAME TO AN ABRUPT STOP.
Narrative: I LANDED THE BONANZA ON RWY 23 AND EXITED THE ACTIVE BY TURNING L ONTO TXWY G. AFTER I PULLED PAST THE HOLD LINE, I STOPPED AND COMPLETED MY POST RWY CHKLIST (FLAPS UP, STROBES OFF, ETC) AND CALLED FOR PERMISSION TO TAXI. THE REPLY XMISSION WAS A BIT GARBLED BUT I THOUGHT I HEARD 'XXXX CLR TO TAXI TO GA TERMINAL' AND BEGAN TO MOVE FORWARD AND CROSS TXWY A. TXWY G MAKES A 45 DEG ENTRY ONTO TXWY A, AND ONLY AFTER I BEGAN TO MOVE DID I LOOK ACROSS MY WIFE AND SEE THE CHEYENNE ON MY R, MOVING ON A COLLISION COURSE. DUE TO THE 45 DEG ENTRY THE TWIN WAS IN MY 5 O'CLOCK POS. BOTH OF US BRAKED AT THE SAME TIME AND CAME TO A STOP ABOUT 30 FT APART. THE CTLR THEN CLRED THE TWIN TO CONTINUE AND THEN, AFTER A BIT OF A LECTURE, CLRED ME TO GA, WHICH WAS STRAIGHT AHEAD ON TXWY G. THE FACTORS WHICH LED TO THIS NMAC WERE UNCLR RADIO XMISSION BY GND (WHICH I ACKNOWLEDGED), MOVEMENT BY ME BEFORE I HAD CLRED THE RTE VISUALLY, AND MY UNFAMILIARITY WITH THE ARPT.
