Narrative:
I was landing runway 21 at sdl, after touchdown, because of following traffic I turned off at first hi-speed at approximately 20 KTS. Traffic at this time was busy. Tower is on most of time, no gaps. Tower said ground 121.6. Called ground no answer, no talk. Called again and ground came up with question, 'why are you on taxiway?' I replied 'just released from tower.' he replied that 'I must stop at marked turn-off.' he then started quoting aim rules and regulations. I believe that in this case had I stopped at marks, aircraft following would have had to stop on or part way off runway, due to the very short distance of hi-speed. I moved onto the taxiway for safety reasons. As PIC I have the right to deviate for safety. Next afternoon, I observed this area. Only approximately 150 ft separate runway 21 and taxiway. 2 challengers and 1 G4 taxied out. Wing overlap appeared to be 30 ft.

Title: PIPER 31T PLT WENT PAST TXWY HOLD LINES WHEN EXITING RWY HIGH SPD EXIT.
Narrative: I WAS LNDG RWY 21 AT SDL, AFTER TOUCHDOWN, BECAUSE OF FOLLOWING TFC I TURNED OFF AT FIRST HI-SPD AT APPROX 20 KTS. TFC AT THIS TIME WAS BUSY. TWR IS ON MOST OF TIME, NO GAPS. TWR SAID GND 121.6. CALLED GND NO ANSWER, NO TALK. CALLED AGAIN AND GND CAME UP WITH QUESTION, 'WHY ARE YOU ON TXWY?' I REPLIED 'JUST RELEASED FROM TWR.' HE REPLIED THAT 'I MUST STOP AT MARKED TURN-OFF.' HE THEN STARTED QUOTING AIM RULES AND REGS. I BELIEVE THAT IN THIS CASE HAD I STOPPED AT MARKS, ACFT FOLLOWING WOULD HAVE HAD TO STOP ON OR PART WAY OFF RWY, DUE TO THE VERY SHORT DISTANCE OF HI-SPD. I MOVED ONTO THE TXWY FOR SAFETY REASONS. AS PIC I HAVE THE RIGHT TO DEVIATE FOR SAFETY. NEXT AFTERNOON, I OBSERVED THIS AREA. ONLY APPROX 150 FT SEPARATE RWY 21 AND TXWY. 2 CHALLENGERS AND 1 G4 TAXIED OUT. WING OVERLAP APPEARED TO BE 30 FT.
