Narrative:
I live in a fly-in community (xx) plus road miles north of tfr. I knew about a planned space shot and associated tfr's, but thought we were well outside the 40 mile ring. So I took off, flew locally west of our airport, and then landed. Upon landing I phoned the tower as requested, and they told me the facts. Our airport was 34 NM from the tfr and I had unknowingly flown out of and then back into the 30-40 mile ring where flight needed prior ATC approval. Amongst other things, I learned again that air miles are shorter than land miles and NM are longer than statute miles big surprise! Next time I'll check first with flight service.
