Narrative:
We accepted altitude change clearance meant for other aircraft with same call sign, but different company. On cougar STAR, inside banty intersection, level 6000 ft. Told to slow to 190 KTS, then descend to 4000 ft. Read back clearance. While slowly descending, thought we heard approach clear us to 3000 ft. Read back clearance. Approach control said, 'negative, that was for other traffic, different company, maintain 6000 ft.' we acknowledged. We were now at 5600 ft and returned promptly to 6000 ft. We had no prior knowledge of other different company traffic being on our frequency.
