Narrative:
Climbing to intermediate altitude of 17000 ft, climb checklist done at 16500 ft with altimeter reset to 29.92 from 30.53. At 17000 ft, first officer realized 29.92 had been set for a 17000 ft leveloff called for altitude to be returned to 30.53 and captain immediately began a correction leveloff. Aircraft momentarily ballooned up to 17400 ft before climb was corrected back to 17000 ft. Early climb checklist caused problem probably from bad habit. PNF checked MCP leveloff altitude after completion of climb checklist. Good habit developed from prior experience.

Narrative: CLBING TO INTERMEDIATE ALT OF 17000 FT, CLB CHKLIST DONE AT 16500 FT WITH ALTIMETER RESET TO 29.92 FROM 30.53. AT 17000 FT, FO REALIZED 29.92 HAD BEEN SET FOR A 17000 FT LEVELOFF CALLED FOR ALT TO BE RETURNED TO 30.53 AND CAPT IMMEDIATELY BEGAN A CORRECTION LEVELOFF. ACFT MOMENTARILY BALLOONED UP TO 17400 FT BEFORE CLB WAS CORRECTED BACK TO 17000 FT. EARLY CLB CHKLIST CAUSED PROB PROBABLY FROM BAD HABIT. PNF CHKED MCP LEVELOFF ALT AFTER COMPLETION OF CLB CHKLIST. GOOD HABIT DEVELOPED FROM PRIOR EXPERIENCE.
