Narrative:
Landed on runway 21L in dtw. Taxied north on taxiway west, turned left on taxiway F. Approaching runway 21R was cleared 'traffic on a 2 and a half final cross runway 21R.' I proceeded to cross runway 21R and noticed that a jet (rj type) had begun takeoff roll and was aborting. Safely across runway 21R we queried tower 'were we cleared to cross runway 21R.' tower replied in the affirmative. I phoned ATC as requested at gate and related the above. Supplemental information from acn 543907: on the tower frequency of 118.4 we were told to 'cross runway 21R, traffic on a two and a half mi final.' we acknowledged and crossed the runway. As we completed our crossing we noticed that a crj aircraft at the departure end of the runway, had begun its departure roll. As we cleared the runway we noticed the crj had began to abort their takeoff. We verified with dtw tower that we were in fact cleared to cross, the tower reply was 'affirmative.' I feel high density airports and minimum staffing could be at fault, at all levels of aviation.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DC9-30 CREW WAS CLRED TO CROSS RWY 21R AT TXWY F, DIRECTLY INTO THE TKOF PATH OF A CRJ AT DTW. THE CRJ ABORTED TKOF. IN ADDITION THERE WAS AN ACFT ON A TWO AND A HALF MI FINAL APCH FOR THE SAME RWY.
Narrative: LANDED ON RWY 21L IN DTW. TAXIED N ON TXWY W, TURNED L ON TXWY F. APCHING RWY 21R WAS CLRED 'TFC ON A 2 AND A HALF FINAL CROSS RWY 21R.' I PROCEEDED TO CROSS RWY 21R AND NOTICED THAT A JET (RJ TYPE) HAD BEGUN TKOF ROLL AND WAS ABORTING. SAFELY ACROSS RWY 21R WE QUERIED TWR 'WERE WE CLRED TO CROSS RWY 21R.' TWR REPLIED IN THE AFFIRMATIVE. I PHONED ATC AS REQUESTED AT GATE AND RELATED THE ABOVE. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 543907: ON THE TWR FREQ OF 118.4 WE WERE TOLD TO 'CROSS RWY 21R, TFC ON A TWO AND A HALF MI FINAL.' WE ACKNOWLEDGED AND CROSSED THE RWY. AS WE COMPLETED OUR CROSSING WE NOTICED THAT A CRJ ACFT AT THE DEP END OF THE RWY, HAD BEGUN ITS DEP ROLL. AS WE CLRED THE RWY WE NOTICED THE CRJ HAD BEGAN TO ABORT THEIR TAKEOFF. WE VERIFIED WITH DTW TWR THAT WE WERE IN FACT CLRED TO CROSS, THE TWR REPLY WAS 'AFFIRMATIVE.' I FEEL HIGH DENSITY ARPTS AND MINIMUM STAFFING COULD BE AT FAULT, AT ALL LEVELS OF AVIATION.
