Narrative:
A deviation around WX was initiated at cruise altitude by the PF. During the deviation we experienced a brief period of turbulence. The aircraft was jolted but no applicable deviations in airspeed or altitude occurred. The altitude deviated approximately 50 ft. Shortly afterwards the flight attendants notified us that several passenger had been injured. We notified ATC and company that we were deviating for landing and we requested medical assistance meet us upon arrival. Landing occurred approximately 25 mins later. Our route of flight was well away from, and upwind of all radar returns. Prior to encountering the turbulence, the fasten seatbelt sign was turned on. Given our distance from the radar returns, the turbulence we experienced was unexpected.
