Narrative:
We were #2 for departure, runway 1. Lead aircraft then departed runway 1. As the captain called for the checklist, I announced our intention to depart runway 1. During our challenge and response sequence, I overheard an aircraft announcing their intention to depart runway 19. The runway elevation is higher in the middle than on the ends, making it impossible to see the aircraft intending to depart opposite direction. I applied the brakes as the captain began to taxi into position for takeoff, and informed him of the traffic conflict of which he was unaware. I then announced our intention to hold short of runway 1 and allow the runway 19 traffic to depart. Contributing factors: light and variable wind, pilots not monitoring radio during taxi, pilots not announcing runway of intended departure during taxi. Corrective actions: pilots need increased vigilance during periods of high cockpit workload, especially at uncontrolled airports.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: BAE3100 INSTRUCTOR PLT, ACTING AS FO, STOPPED CAPT FROM TAXIING INTO POS FOR TKOF DUE TO OVERHEARING A SINGLE ENG CESSNA ANNOUNCE BEGINNING TKOF FROM OPPOSITE END OF THE UNCTLED ARPT RWY.
Narrative: WE WERE #2 FOR DEP, RWY 1. LEAD ACFT THEN DEPARTED RWY 1. AS THE CAPT CALLED FOR THE CHKLIST, I ANNOUNCED OUR INTENTION TO DEPART RWY 1. DURING OUR CHALLENGE AND RESPONSE SEQUENCE, I OVERHEARD AN ACFT ANNOUNCING THEIR INTENTION TO DEPART RWY 19. THE RWY ELEVATION IS HIGHER IN THE MIDDLE THAN ON THE ENDS, MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE THE ACFT INTENDING TO DEPART OPPOSITE DIRECTION. I APPLIED THE BRAKES AS THE CAPT BEGAN TO TAXI INTO POS FOR TKOF, AND INFORMED HIM OF THE TFC CONFLICT OF WHICH HE WAS UNAWARE. I THEN ANNOUNCED OUR INTENTION TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 1 AND ALLOW THE RWY 19 TFC TO DEPART. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: LIGHT AND VARIABLE WIND, PLTS NOT MONITORING RADIO DURING TAXI, PLTS NOT ANNOUNCING RWY OF INTENDED DEP DURING TAXI. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS: PLTS NEED INCREASED VIGILANCE DURING PERIODS OF HIGH COCKPIT WORKLOAD, ESPECIALLY AT UNCTLED ARPTS.
