Narrative:
The fuel control switch to cut-off was missed in the shutdown checklist. It was a very early morning flight from lga to dfw. The flight duration was a lot longer due to maintenance problems on pushback and WX rertes around thunderstorms. We were not able to get a timely bathroom break due to security procedures and multiple route changes. Landing and taxi in at dfw were uneventful. Block-in was quick and the checklist items for shutdown were verbalized. Each of us thought the other crew member shut down the last engine with fuel control cut-off switch. The switch was not confirmed off. We both urgently needed a restroom break. As we left the cockpit, the cockpit door was inadvertently shut and locked behind us. We found a flight attendant with a key and we got the door opened. I did not hear the engine running when I left the aircraft. We were contacted by operations and returned to the aircraft and shut down the right engine. Contributing factors were: urgent physiological needs and automatic-locking door with no key in cabin.
