Narrative:
My friend (a pilot) was flying his airplane and I was filing the IFR flight plan for the trip. During the taxi portion, I was receiving the clearance while he taxied. The hold short line for runway 20 is way back on the taxiway. Neither my friend nor I thought that the hold short line was the one for runway 20 until we got right on it (when we could see the taxiway to runway 20 clearly). The taxiing pilot stopped at that point (about 4 ft past the line) and I called for clearance to take off. The tower controller was nasty and remarked that we didn't know how to fly, and 'had passed the hold short line.' we again asked for clearance to take off and were told that we would have to turn around on the taxiway and get behind the line before he would let us take off. We turned around and got behind the line and he cleared us to take off without any heading or further instructions. I called and asked for further departure instructions and he snapped back to call departure. I said 'I don't want to make any more mistakes.' he just laughed.

Title: THE RPTR AND HIS PIC FRIEND, TAXIING FOR TKOF AT MKL, TAXIED PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE.
Narrative: MY FRIEND (A PLT) WAS FLYING HIS AIRPLANE AND I WAS FILING THE IFR FLT PLAN FOR THE TRIP. DURING THE TAXI PORTION, I WAS RECEIVING THE CLRNC WHILE HE TAXIED. THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 20 IS WAY BACK ON THE TXWY. NEITHER MY FRIEND NOR I THOUGHT THAT THE HOLD SHORT LINE WAS THE ONE FOR RWY 20 UNTIL WE GOT RIGHT ON IT (WHEN WE COULD SEE THE TXWY TO RWY 20 CLRLY). THE TAXIING PLT STOPPED AT THAT POINT (ABOUT 4 FT PAST THE LINE) AND I CALLED FOR CLRNC TO TAKE OFF. THE TWR CTLR WAS NASTY AND REMARKED THAT WE DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO FLY, AND 'HAD PASSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE.' WE AGAIN ASKED FOR CLRNC TO TAKE OFF AND WERE TOLD THAT WE WOULD HAVE TO TURN AROUND ON THE TXWY AND GET BEHIND THE LINE BEFORE HE WOULD LET US TAKE OFF. WE TURNED AROUND AND GOT BEHIND THE LINE AND HE CLRED US TO TAKE OFF WITHOUT ANY HDG OR FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS. I CALLED AND ASKED FOR FURTHER DEP INSTRUCTIONS AND HE SNAPPED BACK TO CALL DEP. I SAID 'I DON'T WANT TO MAKE ANY MORE MISTAKES.' HE JUST LAUGHED.
