Narrative:

After departing kake, ak, airport I flew about 10 mins on a schedule route to petersburg, ak, when the right half of the engine cowling separated from the aircraft. I then entered a left 180 degree turn to return to the departure airport. At this point the entire top cowling separated from the aircraft. Oil immediately began to flow onto the windshield. I declared a mayday on 121.5 and entered a 30 degree right bank and continued to circle until the coast guard arrived at my position. The coast guard found a beach near my position. I flew over the beach once before setting up for my final approach. The aircraft touchdown happened under its own power at idle in the appropriate landing attitude. I helped my passenger exit the aircraft.
