Narrative:
We were in a left turn, autoplt on, navigation and VNAV engaged. On radar/TCASII screen, I noticed an aircraft at our 1 O'clock position 800 ft above us and descending. Almost simultaneously, TCASII issued an RA 'descend' at over 5000 FPM. I disconnected autoplt and autothrottle and aggressively nosed the aircraft over. First officer saw aircraft pass directly overhead (through eyebrow window) and jump seat rider noted +600 ft above on TCASII. ZTL called us during this and issued an immediate descent to FL220 and gave the other aircraft an immediate turn. We did not catch the other aircraft's call sign. Flight leveled at FL220 and continued to atl without incident.

ALMOST SIMULTANEOUSLY, TCASII ISSUED AN RA 'DSND' AT OVER 5000 FPM. I DISCONNECTED AUTOPLT AND AUTOTHROTTLE AND AGGRESSIVELY NOSED THE ACFT OVER. FO SAW ACFT PASS DIRECTLY OVERHEAD (THROUGH EYEBROW WINDOW) AND JUMP SEAT RIDER NOTED +600 FT ABOVE ON TCASII.
