Narrative:
Took off on runway 25 at den. After power was applied, we smelled sort of a paint smell coming from the air conditioning. After liftoff, the smell got stronger. I queried the tower and they said that some work was done on runway 25. I thought it might be paint work. The smell persisted and the flight attendants called saying that the cabin was pretty bad. Ran the cabin altitude up to get the cabin climbing and air flowing and the smell slowly dissipated. Just on a whim, I called operations and they confirmed that a solvent had been sprayed on the bleed valves due to a left engine acceleration problem the day before. We now at least knew what the smell was. Didn't smell it again till we put the gear down for landing. The crew in general felt lousy after arrival and the airplane was taken OTS. The crew went out sick. As I write this I feel like I've painted a couple of rooms with strong paint. Fortunately, that feeling didn't come on till now.

Title: DEBILITATING PAINT FUMES ARE SMELLED THROUGHOUT AN MD80 ACFT ON TKOF FROM DEN THAT LATER TOOK THE ACFT OTS AND PLACED THE CREW ON SICK STATUS AFTER LNDG AT ORD, IL.
Narrative: TOOK OFF ON RWY 25 AT DEN. AFTER PWR WAS APPLIED, WE SMELLED SORT OF A PAINT SMELL COMING FROM THE AIR CONDITIONING. AFTER LIFTOFF, THE SMELL GOT STRONGER. I QUERIED THE TWR AND THEY SAID THAT SOME WORK WAS DONE ON RWY 25. I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE PAINT WORK. THE SMELL PERSISTED AND THE FLT ATTENDANTS CALLED SAYING THAT THE CABIN WAS PRETTY BAD. RAN THE CABIN ALT UP TO GET THE CABIN CLBING AND AIR FLOWING AND THE SMELL SLOWLY DISSIPATED. JUST ON A WHIM, I CALLED OPS AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT A SOLVENT HAD BEEN SPRAYED ON THE BLEED VALVES DUE TO A L ENG ACCELERATION PROB THE DAY BEFORE. WE NOW AT LEAST KNEW WHAT THE SMELL WAS. DIDN'T SMELL IT AGAIN TILL WE PUT THE GEAR DOWN FOR LNDG. THE CREW IN GENERAL FELT LOUSY AFTER ARR AND THE AIRPLANE WAS TAKEN OTS. THE CREW WENT OUT SICK. AS I WRITE THIS I FEEL LIKE I'VE PAINTED A COUPLE OF ROOMS WITH STRONG PAINT. FORTUNATELY, THAT FEELING DIDN'T COME ON TILL NOW.
