Narrative:
I took over sector 66 and in the briefing was told the BE10 was cleared to 9000 ft going to springfield. The flight plan said sln sgw 3v3. Since I did not know where sgw was, I assumed sgw was in springfield somewhere that I did not know (springfield is the most popular city name in the united states of america). I departed the AC50 and the route readout stated the AC50 would go west. The AC50 called VFR off sln and I stated he would have to wait until 5 mi east to get a clearance. The BE10 called airborne and I asked if he was turning right on course. He said yes. The AC50 called east and I cleared him to mkc. The transponder code popped up on the BE10 2 mi behind the AC50 at the same altitude, climbing. I stopped the AC50 climb letting the BE10 climb above him. Conflict alert never went off. I asked the BE10 about turning right on course which would be west and he said I turned right on course (meaning straight on course east). FSS had mistyped the identify for springfield, mo (sgf) which is east of salina, ks. This typo caused the start of the problem.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ZKC ARTCC CTLR NEARLY LOST SEPARATION BTWN A BE10 AND AN AC50 BECAUSE HE WAS UNFAMILIAR WITH ROUTING IDENTS.
Narrative: I TOOK OVER SECTOR 66 AND IN THE BRIEFING WAS TOLD THE BE10 WAS CLRED TO 9000 FT GOING TO SPRINGFIELD. THE FLT PLAN SAID SLN SGW 3V3. SINCE I DID NOT KNOW WHERE SGW WAS, I ASSUMED SGW WAS IN SPRINGFIELD SOMEWHERE THAT I DID NOT KNOW (SPRINGFIELD IS THE MOST POPULAR CITY NAME IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA). I DEPARTED THE AC50 AND THE RTE READOUT STATED THE AC50 WOULD GO W. THE AC50 CALLED VFR OFF SLN AND I STATED HE WOULD HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL 5 MI E TO GET A CLRNC. THE BE10 CALLED AIRBORNE AND I ASKED IF HE WAS TURNING R ON COURSE. HE SAID YES. THE AC50 CALLED E AND I CLRED HIM TO MKC. THE XPONDER CODE POPPED UP ON THE BE10 2 MI BEHIND THE AC50 AT THE SAME ALT, CLBING. I STOPPED THE AC50 CLB LETTING THE BE10 CLB ABOVE HIM. CONFLICT ALERT NEVER WENT OFF. I ASKED THE BE10 ABOUT TURNING R ON COURSE WHICH WOULD BE W AND HE SAID I TURNED R ON COURSE (MEANING STRAIGHT ON COURSE E). FSS HAD MISTYPED THE IDENT FOR SPRINGFIELD, MO (SGF) WHICH IS E OF SALINA, KS. THIS TYPO CAUSED THE START OF THE PROB.
