Narrative:
Tower cleared us to line up and wait on runway 19L (full length). After stopping in position on runway 19L, we received what all 3 of us heard as 'cleared for takeoff runway 19L,' which I repeated to the tower. As the first officer advanced the thrust levers I saw a B737 landing to my left on the intersecting runway 27. We had just begun to move forward when I put the thrust levers to idle and applied braking. At this time tower asked if we understood that our takeoff clearance was after the landing B737. I responded that we did not. Tower then cleared us to take off, which we did after confirming the aircraft was in the proper takeoff confign. Corrective action: when in europe, my response to ground, tower clearance when understood not to be conditional will be (crossing, taking off, etc) now.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B767-200 FLC MISUNDERSTANDS TKOF CLRNC AT EHAM.
Narrative: TWR CLRED US TO LINE UP AND WAIT ON RWY 19L (FULL LENGTH). AFTER STOPPING IN POS ON RWY 19L, WE RECEIVED WHAT ALL 3 OF US HEARD AS 'CLRED FOR TKOF RWY 19L,' WHICH I REPEATED TO THE TWR. AS THE FO ADVANCED THE THRUST LEVERS I SAW A B737 LNDG TO MY L ON THE INTERSECTING RWY 27. WE HAD JUST BEGUN TO MOVE FORWARD WHEN I PUT THE THRUST LEVERS TO IDLE AND APPLIED BRAKING. AT THIS TIME TWR ASKED IF WE UNDERSTOOD THAT OUR TKOF CLRNC WAS AFTER THE LNDG B737. I RESPONDED THAT WE DID NOT. TWR THEN CLRED US TO TAKE OFF, WHICH WE DID AFTER CONFIRMING THE ACFT WAS IN THE PROPER TKOF CONFIGN. CORRECTIVE ACTION: WHEN IN EUROPE, MY RESPONSE TO GND, TWR CLRNC WHEN UNDERSTOOD NOT TO BE CONDITIONAL WILL BE (XING, TAKING OFF, ETC) NOW.
