Narrative:
On 08/fri/02 at XA20Z we were notified by dispatch that aircraft X flight xx, ZZZ-ZZZZ on 08/wed/02 was dispatched illegally. The inoperative APU MEL 49-01 04, requirement for one roundtrip from united states to europe and back was not applied correctly. All 3 crew members referenced the MEL log entry and it appeared that the APU had just been placarded in ZZZ thus making it legal for one roundtrip. On 08/fri/02 dispatch notified us that closer research into aircraft history, its APU had gone inoperative in ZZZ1, making it illegal for dispatch on 08/wed/02. Contributing factors to the event, our 1ST aircraft went OTS for a mechanical at the gate, at scheduled departure time plus 2 hours, replacement aircraft X with maintenance trying to complete an ETOPS check and defer numerous items. The log was not available for history review until the door was about to be shut at XH00 pm local time.
