Narrative:

While en route from ams direct ZZZ an intermittent odor was detected. The odor, while faint and intermittent was also detected by the flight attendants. We tried to locate the source of the odor while heading west approaching the coast of ireland. About 100 mi offshore the odor started to intensify and a decision was made to return. At about this time smoke and flames came out of a coffeemaker in the forward galley. The fire was extinguished and we made an emergency return to shannon ireland. No more smoke was noted and the emergency return went smoothly.
