Narrative:
During the preflight, the first officer noticed that both nose tires were stamped '700/9000 only' on aircraft, which is a B737-400. I called maintenance control and they were initially unable to verify if these tires were legal on our aircraft. After talking to technical services, the maintenance controller decided to change both tires. Mechanics were called, but were delayed due to a mechanical problem on their own aircraft. We were advised that it would take approximately 1 hour to change the tires after the mechanics arrived. Passenger were released into the terminal and told to return to the gate area in 45 mins. While waiting for the mechanics, maintenance control determined that these tires are legal on the -400 aircraft. Apparently, we are switching to this type of tire on the -400. The tires come from the factory already stamped '700/900 only.' I verified the tire type (27 X 7.75-15-12 ply radial) with maintenance control and the mechanics signed off the logbook write-up. We departed 3 mins later.
