Narrative:
After landing from a visual approach on runway 24R at lax, the captain took the airplane at approximately 50 KTS. We turned off the runway at taxiway aa. The captain misjudged the distance to the hold short line to runway 24L and we came to a stop with the nose of the aircraft approximately 10 ft past the line. Tower told us to hold short and I had replied. Compounding the confusion was the fact that the door on my oxygen mask was slightly ajar, and while I was transmitting, no words were going out. I switched to the hand microphone and repeated the hold short instructions. Taxi in and shutdown were uneventful. Supplemental information from acn 558911: while attempting to make sure the tail was clear, I misjudged the distance and went over the line by about 10 ft. The nose was not into the runway but was over the line. Tower canceled the takeoff roll of a B747. I am new to this aircraft and also not as familiar with the 24 runways in lax as the runways 25's (south complex). It seemed as if there was less stopping distance after clearing. Nevertheless, it was my mistake. I called the tower. The full face oxygen set-up is a problem on the B767-400 as it can appear to be properly stowed and normal xmissions are inhibited. One must check his microphone after stowing. Due to communication confusion, we did not have time to tell tower that we were over the hold short line.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B767-400 FLC HAS RWY INCURSION CAUSING ANOTHER ACR TO ABORT ITS TKOF AT LAX.
Narrative: AFTER LANDING FROM A VISUAL APCH ON RWY 24R AT LAX, THE CAPT TOOK THE AIRPLANE AT APPROX 50 KTS. WE TURNED OFF THE RWY AT TXWY AA. THE CAPT MISJUDGED THE DISTANCE TO THE HOLD SHORT LINE TO RWY 24L AND WE CAME TO A STOP WITH THE NOSE OF THE ACFT APPROX 10 FT PAST THE LINE. TWR TOLD US TO HOLD SHORT AND I HAD REPLIED. COMPOUNDING THE CONFUSION WAS THE FACT THAT THE DOOR ON MY OXYGEN MASK WAS SLIGHTLY AJAR, AND WHILE I WAS XMITTING, NO WORDS WERE GOING OUT. I SWITCHED TO THE HAND MIKE AND REPEATED THE HOLD SHORT INSTRUCTIONS. TAXI IN AND SHUTDOWN WERE UNEVENTFUL. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 558911: WHILE ATTEMPTING TO MAKE SURE THE TAIL WAS CLR, I MISJUDGED THE DISTANCE AND WENT OVER THE LINE BY ABOUT 10 FT. THE NOSE WAS NOT INTO THE RWY BUT WAS OVER THE LINE. TWR CANCELED THE TKOF ROLL OF A B747. I AM NEW TO THIS ACFT AND ALSO NOT AS FAMILIAR WITH THE 24 RWYS IN LAX AS THE RWYS 25'S (S COMPLEX). IT SEEMED AS IF THERE WAS LESS STOPPING DISTANCE AFTER CLRING. NEVERTHELESS, IT WAS MY MISTAKE. I CALLED THE TWR. THE FULL FACE OXYGEN SET-UP IS A PROB ON THE B767-400 AS IT CAN APPEAR TO BE PROPERLY STOWED AND NORMAL XMISSIONS ARE INHIBITED. ONE MUST CHK HIS MIKE AFTER STOWING. DUE TO COM CONFUSION, WE DID NOT HAVE TIME TO TELL TWR THAT WE WERE OVER THE HOLD SHORT LINE.
