Narrative:

Captain was explaining various company procedure(south) while awaiting takeoff clearance. A clearance was given and the first officer read back with a 'copy cleared for takeoff.' upon climb out, another controller, from tower, advised that the clearance was only a departure clearance, not a takeoff. While operating a part 121 operation, crew was advised to taxi from the ramp to runway 12. Holding short of runway 12, crew advised to hold short. A few mins later, crew given taxi into position and hold. While holding in position, captain asked tower how long the delay was to be expected. Tower advised takeoff clearance momentarily. A few mins passed, then tower issued a clearance. First officer read back the clearance with 'copy clear for takeoff.' upon climb out, a different controller advised that the 'clearance' was a departure, not a takeoff clearance. The confusion started with what appeared to be a student controller in the tower. The controller was getting our call sign backwards and stumbling through the clearance. Both the captain and first officer recall hearing clear for takeoff. If it was the case and the controller did not issue a takeoff clearance, why did the supervisor allow the crew to continue with the takeoff roll. Crew taxied past the arresting cables during the takeoff roll. This distance is approximately 1000 ft allowing controller to correct clearance.

Title: ATR72 FO IS GIVEN INSTRUCTIONS TO TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD BUT READS BACK CLRED FOR TKOF.

Narrative: CAPT WAS EXPLAINING VARIOUS COMPANY PROC(S) WHILE AWAITING TKOF CLRNC. A CLRNC WAS GIVEN AND THE FO READ BACK WITH A 'COPY CLRED FOR TKOF.' UPON CLBOUT, ANOTHER CTLR, FROM TWR, ADVISED THAT THE CLRNC WAS ONLY A DEP CLRNC, NOT A TKOF. WHILE OPERATING A PART 121 OP, CREW WAS ADVISED TO TAXI FROM THE RAMP TO RWY 12. HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 12, CREW ADVISED TO HOLD SHORT. A FEW MINS LATER, CREW GIVEN TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD. WHILE HOLDING IN POS, CAPT ASKED TWR HOW LONG THE DELAY WAS TO BE EXPECTED. TWR ADVISED TKOF CLRNC MOMENTARILY. A FEW MINS PASSED, THEN TWR ISSUED A CLRNC. FO READ BACK THE CLRNC WITH 'COPY CLR FOR TKOF.' UPON CLBOUT, A DIFFERENT CTLR ADVISED THAT THE 'CLRNC' WAS A DEP, NOT A TKOF CLRNC. THE CONFUSION STARTED WITH WHAT APPEARED TO BE A STUDENT CTLR IN THE TWR. THE CTLR WAS GETTING OUR CALL SIGN BACKWARDS AND STUMBLING THROUGH THE CLRNC. BOTH THE CAPT AND FO RECALL HEARING CLR FOR TKOF. IF IT WAS THE CASE AND THE CTLR DID NOT ISSUE A TKOF CLRNC, WHY DID THE SUPVR ALLOW THE CREW TO CONTINUE WITH THE TKOF ROLL. CREW TAXIED PAST THE ARRESTING CABLES DURING THE TKOF ROLL. THIS DISTANCE IS APPROX 1000 FT ALLOWING CTLR TO CORRECT CLRNC.
