Narrative:
Holding short at runway 8, tower cleared us to 'taxi into position and hold' for runway 8. First officer read back 'runway 8 on and hold, xxyz.' made mental note to discuss no standard phraseology later in flight. As the aircraft crossed the hold short line the controller tells us to hold position that he may need to take us off the runway as we were supposed to hold short, depending on the spacing with arrival traffic. We were then given takeoff clearance as soon as the MD80 in front of us was off the runway. We departed with no conflicts with any other aircraft. I was giving IOE to an first officer who was transitioning to the B737 from the B757. To this point, he was showing good understanding of the aircraft and airport system. No instruction was occurring as we were well caught up, even ahead of the situation. All checklist had been accomplished and sterile cockpit procedures were being observed.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A NEAR GND CONFLICT WHEN A B737-700 FLT CROSSES OVER THE RWY HOLD SHORT LINE WITH TFC ON FINAL AND TFC DEP AHEAD OF THEM AT IAH, TX.
Narrative: HOLDING SHORT AT RWY 8, TWR CLRED US TO 'TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD' FOR RWY 8. FO READ BACK 'RWY 8 ON AND HOLD, XXYZ.' MADE MENTAL NOTE TO DISCUSS NO STANDARD PHRASEOLOGY LATER IN FLT. AS THE ACFT CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE THE CTLR TELLS US TO HOLD POS THAT HE MAY NEED TO TAKE US OFF THE RWY AS WE WERE SUPPOSED TO HOLD SHORT, DEPENDING ON THE SPACING WITH ARR TFC. WE WERE THEN GIVEN TKOF CLRNC AS SOON AS THE MD80 IN FRONT OF US WAS OFF THE RWY. WE DEPARTED WITH NO CONFLICTS WITH ANY OTHER ACFT. I WAS GIVING IOE TO AN FO WHO WAS TRANSITIONING TO THE B737 FROM THE B757. TO THIS POINT, HE WAS SHOWING GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF THE ACFT AND ARPT SYS. NO INSTRUCTION WAS OCCURRING AS WE WERE WELL CAUGHT UP, EVEN AHEAD OF THE SIT. ALL CHKLIST HAD BEEN ACCOMPLISHED AND STERILE COCKPIT PROCS WERE BEING OBSERVED.
