Narrative:
During vectors for an ILS approach to bgm, we had an unexpected GPWS mode Z warning while in IMC. At the time of the warning, we were at 3300 ft, which is the MVA for the area. We followed the CFIT/GPWS escape maneuver found in the saab 340 pom. We climbed to 5000 ft MSL, the mora was 4800 ft for the bgm area. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the aircraft was in IMC, with light mist. No rain was observed on the aircraft windshield or on the WX radar. The crew was being vectored for the ILS approach to runway 16. The aircraft was level. The aircraft is not equipped with egpws. The captain does not know whether the aircraft has a dual radio altimeter system, or a single radio altimeter with dual indicators. TCASII showed no other aircraft near the aircraft. The captain did not write up the GPWS, as it tested ok on the ground after landing. The captain has reported the incident to his union air safety people.

Title: SF34 CREW HAD A GPWS 'TERRAIN, TERRAIN' WARNING WHILE BEING VECTORED AT MVA IN BHM CLASS E AIRSPACE.
Narrative: DURING VECTORS FOR AN ILS APCH TO BGM, WE HAD AN UNEXPECTED GPWS MODE Z WARNING WHILE IN IMC. AT THE TIME OF THE WARNING, WE WERE AT 3300 FT, WHICH IS THE MVA FOR THE AREA. WE FOLLOWED THE CFIT/GPWS ESCAPE MANEUVER FOUND IN THE SAAB 340 POM. WE CLBED TO 5000 FT MSL, THE MORA WAS 4800 FT FOR THE BGM AREA. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE ACFT WAS IN IMC, WITH LIGHT MIST. NO RAIN WAS OBSERVED ON THE ACFT WINDSHIELD OR ON THE WX RADAR. THE CREW WAS BEING VECTORED FOR THE ILS APCH TO RWY 16. THE ACFT WAS LEVEL. THE ACFT IS NOT EQUIPPED WITH EGPWS. THE CAPT DOES NOT KNOW WHETHER THE ACFT HAS A DUAL RADIO ALTIMETER SYS, OR A SINGLE RADIO ALTIMETER WITH DUAL INDICATORS. TCASII SHOWED NO OTHER ACFT NEAR THE ACFT. THE CAPT DID NOT WRITE UP THE GPWS, AS IT TESTED OK ON THE GND AFTER LNDG. THE CAPT HAS RPTED THE INCIDENT TO HIS UNION AIR SAFETY PEOPLE.
