Narrative:

Cleared for takeoff from runway 9L to fly a heading of 220 degrees. After reaching 5000 ft, we were instructed by ATC to climb to 13000 ft and fly a heading of 300 degrees. Looking out the right window, I saw an air carrier Y widebody transport about 3 mi away at about our 3 O'clock position moving to our 12 O'clock position. I queried ATC if the airplane at our 2 O'clock position would be a factor. We were passing through about 7000 ft, which I think is the same altitude as the other plane. 10 seconds later, the controller instructed us to fly a heading of 270 degrees so as to avoid the other plane. I estimate about +500 ft and within 2.5 mi. I'm confident that the clearance was for 13000 ft and 300 degree heading. That is what was read back.

Title: AFTER DEPARTING RWY 9L AND TURNING TO A NW HDG, AN A320 CREW NOTICED A HVY JET ON A CONVERGING COURSE.

Narrative: CLRED FOR TKOF FROM RWY 9L TO FLY A HDG OF 220 DEGS. AFTER REACHING 5000 FT, WE WERE INSTRUCTED BY ATC TO CLB TO 13000 FT AND FLY A HDG OF 300 DEGS. LOOKING OUT THE R WINDOW, I SAW AN ACR Y WDB ABOUT 3 MI AWAY AT ABOUT OUR 3 O'CLOCK POS MOVING TO OUR 12 O'CLOCK POS. I QUERIED ATC IF THE AIRPLANE AT OUR 2 O'CLOCK POS WOULD BE A FACTOR. WE WERE PASSING THROUGH ABOUT 7000 FT, WHICH I THINK IS THE SAME ALT AS THE OTHER PLANE. 10 SECONDS LATER, THE CTLR INSTRUCTED US TO FLY A HDG OF 270 DEGS SO AS TO AVOID THE OTHER PLANE. I ESTIMATE ABOUT +500 FT AND WITHIN 2.5 MI. I'M CONFIDENT THAT THE CLRNC WAS FOR 13000 FT AND 300 DEG HDG. THAT IS WHAT WAS READ BACK.
