Narrative:
Ballast fuel burned inadvertently. We flew flight from dtw to dfw as a ferry flight. When we arrived at dtw, operations had already pulled the flight plan and paperwork for us. Our primary concern after speaking with local maintenance was the vibration of #1 engine. A dtw mechanic described it as substantial during an engine run the previous evening. During climb out above 10000 ft, both the first officer and I went to the aft cabin area to listen and feel for any unusual vibration. During this time we were distraction and inadvertently burned the ballast fuel in the center tank. In the future, I will pay closer attention to the issue of ballast fuel -- especially during off schedule operations.
