Narrative:
We were cleared to taxi from our ramp to runway 23 via taxiway alpha to hold short of runway 23. It was my first trip with a new first officer. I started to taxi on taxiway alpha and turned on taxiway microphone and crossed runway 14/32. Ground control called us and advised us we were not cleared across runway 14/32. I feel both I and the controller were at fault. First of all, taxiway alpha does not take you to runway 23. When we are assigned runway 23 we are normally told to taxi via alpha and microphone to runway 23 not just alpha and a hold short of runway 23. However, it was my responsibility to hear the controller and question the incorrect clearance. It was a classic case of hearing what I expected to hear when in fact, that was not what the controller said.
