Narrative:
I called idaho falls ground for IFR clearance for a flight to boise, identification. After receiving clearance, I was cleared to taxi to active runway. I allowed myself to be distraction explaining run-up procedures to a non pilot passenger that was sitting in the copilot's seat. He asked if we were waiting for an aircraft that was on base to land. I said that we were. After that aircraft landed and after our pre takeoff checklist was completed, I looked for any other traffic in the pattern and began taxi onto the runway as there was no traffic. When approximately 1/2 of the aircraft was on the runway, I realized that I had forgotten to request takeoff clearance from the tower. I immediately stopped my movement and called tower for clearance! They issued me a position and hold clearance followed by a cleared for takeoff clearance. I called the tower on the radio and again by telephone following the flight to apologize. It was very embarrassing! I had been operating from a lot of uncontrolled fields and just had momentary lapse in my thought process. We did not create any traffic conflict, but potentially could have.

Title: C414 PLT HAS RWY INCURSION AT IDA.
Narrative: I CALLED IDAHO FALLS GND FOR IFR CLRNC FOR A FLT TO BOISE, ID. AFTER RECEIVING CLRNC, I WAS CLRED TO TAXI TO ACTIVE RWY. I ALLOWED MYSELF TO BE DISTR EXPLAINING RUN-UP PROCS TO A NON PLT PAX THAT WAS SITTING IN THE COPLT'S SEAT. HE ASKED IF WE WERE WAITING FOR AN ACFT THAT WAS ON BASE TO LAND. I SAID THAT WE WERE. AFTER THAT ACFT LANDED AND AFTER OUR PRE TKOF CHKLIST WAS COMPLETED, I LOOKED FOR ANY OTHER TFC IN THE PATTERN AND BEGAN TAXI ONTO THE RWY AS THERE WAS NO TFC. WHEN APPROX 1/2 OF THE ACFT WAS ON THE RWY, I REALIZED THAT I HAD FORGOTTEN TO REQUEST TKOF CLRNC FROM THE TWR. I IMMEDIATELY STOPPED MY MOVEMENT AND CALLED TWR FOR CLRNC! THEY ISSUED ME A POS AND HOLD CLRNC FOLLOWED BY A CLRED FOR TKOF CLRNC. I CALLED THE TWR ON THE RADIO AND AGAIN BY TELEPHONE FOLLOWING THE FLT TO APOLOGIZE. IT WAS VERY EMBARRASSING! I HAD BEEN OPERATING FROM A LOT OF UNCTLED FIELDS AND JUST HAD MOMENTARY LAPSE IN MY THOUGHT PROCESS. WE DID NOT CREATE ANY TFC CONFLICT, BUT POTENTIALLY COULD HAVE.
