Narrative:
Taxi clearance was given by oma ground control to 'taxi north on taxiway foxtrot to runway 18.' while taxiing as directed, I noticed unlit barriers (2 of the 4 had beacons, but were not lit or were very dim) and abruptly applied the brakes. The aircraft was stopped short of the barriers, and ground control was notified. He said he was sorry, and asked if we could do a 180 degree turn, which was not possible on the taxiway. Airport operations was notified by ground control, and we notified our company operations. Shortly thereafter, an airport operations vehicle arrived, inspected the remaining taxiway, and removed the barriers. He then authority/authorized ground control to allow our continued taxi up taxiway F. 1) taxi clearance received from ground control, and was followed up to seeing the barriers. 2) taxiway closure was not in my company supplied WX package. (Later found in airport operations to company operations facsimile.) 3) darkness along with very dimly or unlit barriers reduced the distance at which barriers could be seen. 4) I don't recall hearing that this taxiway was closed on the ATIS.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A DC9 CREW, TAXIING FOR TKOF AT KOMA, ENCOUNTERED DIMLY LIT BARRIERS ACROSS THEIR ASSIGNED TXWY.
Narrative: TAXI CLRNC WAS GIVEN BY OMA GND CTL TO 'TAXI N ON TXWY FOXTROT TO RWY 18.' WHILE TAXIING AS DIRECTED, I NOTICED UNLIT BARRIERS (2 OF THE 4 HAD BEACONS, BUT WERE NOT LIT OR WERE VERY DIM) AND ABRUPTLY APPLIED THE BRAKES. THE ACFT WAS STOPPED SHORT OF THE BARRIERS, AND GND CTL WAS NOTIFIED. HE SAID HE WAS SORRY, AND ASKED IF WE COULD DO A 180 DEG TURN, WHICH WAS NOT POSSIBLE ON THE TXWY. ARPT OPS WAS NOTIFIED BY GND CTL, AND WE NOTIFIED OUR COMPANY OPS. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, AN ARPT OPS VEHICLE ARRIVED, INSPECTED THE REMAINING TXWY, AND REMOVED THE BARRIERS. HE THEN AUTH GND CTL TO ALLOW OUR CONTINUED TAXI UP TXWY F. 1) TAXI CLRNC RECEIVED FROM GND CTL, AND WAS FOLLOWED UP TO SEEING THE BARRIERS. 2) TXWY CLOSURE WAS NOT IN MY COMPANY SUPPLIED WX PACKAGE. (LATER FOUND IN ARPT OPS TO COMPANY OPS FAX.) 3) DARKNESS ALONG WITH VERY DIMLY OR UNLIT BARRIERS REDUCED THE DISTANCE AT WHICH BARRIERS COULD BE SEEN. 4) I DON'T RECALL HEARING THAT THIS TXWY WAS CLOSED ON THE ATIS.
