Narrative:
Flight just departed runway 25R at phx on the chily 1 SID. Shortly after takeoff, we were instructed to turn right heading 360 degrees. After about 45 seconds on this heading, we were instructed to turn back left heading 270 degrees or 280 degrees, at which time departure asked us to confirm we had been on heading 360 degrees. I confirmed and was then advised that the 360 degree heading was issued to a flight with a similar sounding call sign. I still don't know if in fact this was an ATC error and the 360 degree heading was issued to us (flight abd) or we mistakenly took the wrong heading issued to flight adb. Regardless, it is a lesson in similar sounding call sign communication error.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A319 CREW DEPARTED PHX ON A CHILY SID AND RESPONDED TO A TURN MEANT FOR A COMPANY ACFT WITH A SIMILAR CALL SIGN.
Narrative: FLT JUST DEPARTED RWY 25R AT PHX ON THE CHILY 1 SID. SHORTLY AFTER TKOF, WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO TURN R HDG 360 DEGS. AFTER ABOUT 45 SECONDS ON THIS HDG, WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO TURN BACK L HDG 270 DEGS OR 280 DEGS, AT WHICH TIME DEP ASKED US TO CONFIRM WE HAD BEEN ON HDG 360 DEGS. I CONFIRMED AND WAS THEN ADVISED THAT THE 360 DEG HDG WAS ISSUED TO A FLT WITH A SIMILAR SOUNDING CALL SIGN. I STILL DON'T KNOW IF IN FACT THIS WAS AN ATC ERROR AND THE 360 DEG HDG WAS ISSUED TO US (FLT ABD) OR WE MISTAKENLY TOOK THE WRONG HDG ISSUED TO FLT ADB. REGARDLESS, IT IS A LESSON IN SIMILAR SOUNDING CALL SIGN COM ERROR.
