Narrative:
During a normal event inspection on piper aerostar while reviewing the airworthiness directive list on the aircraft, it was determined that airworthiness directive 2002-23-06 was originally misinterped on the applicability to our aircraft engines. Upon discovering the error, all affected aircraft were grounded and corrective actions were initiated which included notifying mr X at the ZZZ FSDO. We have 4 aircraft that were affected by this airworthiness directive. Our records indicate that we operated 3 aircraft in non compliance of this airworthiness directive. Other aircraft was not flown in non compliance of this airworthiness directive. To avoid future misinterp, the director of maintenance and at least 1 additional employee will review all new airworthiness directives to determine the applicability to our aircraft, engines, propellers, or appliances.
