Narrative:
After flying the manteca arrival into oakland, and on a vector from approach control for an ILS to runway 11 at oakland, our GPWS activated. As a result, we left our assigned altitude when we performed our mandatory GPWS maneuver. As we began our climb, the captain immediately notified approach control of what we were doing. After a climb of about 1200-1400 ft, we returned to our assigned altitude. Subsequent approach and landing at oak was uneventful.
