Narrative:
I departed rno IFR, with the reno 3 departure on runway 16L. I read the departure prior to departing, but I turned left before being cleared by departure. I'd missed the plate. I should have read it more closely prior to departure. Also, in my defense, I think that the plate is poorly designed and hard to read: it's very 'busy' with no clear delineation between emergency and normal procedures, and the phraseology of 'all aircraft maintain...expect clearance to requested...expect radar vectors to assigned route/fix' hides the important information at the end of a long sentence which is only connected to the 'thence...' by the ellipsis preceding that long phrase. The lost communications section is in the same type fact and font, and the 'runways 16L/right departures' is also preceded by an ellipsis. I blew it, but the poorly designed plate is a contributing factor, in my opinion.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: EXPERIMENTAL ACFT (GLASAIR) PLT MISREADS RNO 3 SID AND TURNS EARLY, NOT COMPLYING WITH SID RESTRS. PLT CONCERNED WITH PLATE COMPLEXITY.
Narrative: I DEPARTED RNO IFR, WITH THE RENO 3 DEP ON RWY 16L. I READ THE DEP PRIOR TO DEPARTING, BUT I TURNED L BEFORE BEING CLRED BY DEP. I'D MISSED THE PLATE. I SHOULD HAVE READ IT MORE CLOSELY PRIOR TO DEP. ALSO, IN MY DEFENSE, I THINK THAT THE PLATE IS POORLY DESIGNED AND HARD TO READ: IT'S VERY 'BUSY' WITH NO CLR DELINEATION BTWN EMER AND NORMAL PROCS, AND THE PHRASEOLOGY OF 'ALL ACFT MAINTAIN...EXPECT CLRNC TO REQUESTED...EXPECT RADAR VECTORS TO ASSIGNED RTE/FIX' HIDES THE IMPORTANT INFO AT THE END OF A LONG SENTENCE WHICH IS ONLY CONNECTED TO THE 'THENCE...' BY THE ELLIPSIS PRECEDING THAT LONG PHRASE. THE LOST COMS SECTION IS IN THE SAME TYPE FACT AND FONT, AND THE 'RWYS 16L/R DEPS' IS ALSO PRECEDED BY AN ELLIPSIS. I BLEW IT, BUT THE POORLY DESIGNED PLATE IS A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR, IN MY OPINION.
